Kubu Smart Door Systems: Do You Really Need One?

The smart door market has quietly split into two camps: full smart locks that let you open your door with a phone, and sensor-based systems like Kubu that just tell you whether the door is actually locked. Kubu falls firmly in the second camp. Is that useful? For a surprising number of homeowners, yes.

What Kubu Actually Does

Kubu is a small smart cylinder (essentially a euro cylinder with sensors and Bluetooth) that fits into most existing multi-point lock cases. It doesn't let you unlock your door with your phone. What it does is:

Tell you if the door is locked / unlocked / just closed but not thrown.
Push a notification if the door is left unlocked when you leave home.
Log a history of lock events (useful for parents of teenagers, or Airbnb hosts).

That's essentially the whole product. And that's the point.

Why Sensor-Only Is Actually a Feature

Full-featured smart locks are great in principle, but in a UK context they have real drawbacks:

Battery failure locks you out (or requires the physical key you were trying to avoid carrying).
Some don't hold up well to British weather on a north-facing door.
Insurance implications can be murky.

Kubu sidesteps all of this by not being a lock — it's a sensor bolted onto your existing lock. Your door still opens with a physical key. All Kubu adds is knowledge. And knowledge, it turns out, solves the most common domestic frustration: "did I actually lock the door?"

Fitting

Genuinely easy. A competent DIYer can swap a euro cylinder in 15 minutes with a single screwdriver. The Kubu app walks you through pairing. If you're not confident, any locksmith or door installer will do it in half an hour.

Tip: Measure your existing cylinder length carefully before ordering (both sides from the central cam) — getting the wrong size is the number-one reason for return orders.

What About the Alternatives?

Other smart door options in 2026:

Yale Conexis / Linus — full smart lock, remote unlocking, higher cost, battery-dependent.
Nuki Smart Lock — European option, retrofit-friendly, similar tradeoffs.
Integrated OEM smart handles (some Schuco specifications) — premium factory-fit option.

Kubu's positioning — "sensor only, no unlocking" — is genuinely different from all of these, and simpler to live with.

Where Kubu Falls Short

Honest points against:

No remote unlocking — if that's what you actually want, buy a Yale Conexis.
Bluetooth range is limited — the hub is required for remote notifications.
You still need to physically lock the door — Kubu just tells you what state it's in.

Our Recommendation

If your household has a habit of leaving the door unlocked accidentally, or if you regularly leave the house with a nagging "did I lock it?" thought — Kubu solves that for around £100. That's genuinely useful and hard to argue with.

If you want to unlock your door remotely to let the dog walker in, you want a full smart lock instead. Different product, different price bracket.
